Greatly enjoyed the visit, which allowed the start of very cool projects on Chrysomelidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) communities in dry forests of Nicaragua
Automation of SDMs using KUENM
Finalized the script that will automate the modelling of more than 600 Crustacean species from the NW Pacific and Arctic. Great colab. with Marlon Cobos (University of Kansas). #RockChalk
Award from International Biogeography Society and IBS Early Career Committee
Received a travel award from IBS (International Biogeography Society), which will enable my attendance to the IBS meeting in Malaga (Jan, 2019).
Our new paper is OUT!, on tortoise beetle systematics. We merge DNA and morphology to solve a thorny problem. [Last chapter: PUBLISHED! - aka, all chapters PUBLISHED!]
Our paper on Eltonian noise hypothesis is out @thePeerJ !! Understanding integration of biotic predictors on ecological niche models. Colab with @ATP_biodiv :D. https://peerj.com/articles/6052/ #macroecology #tortoisebeetles #sdm #bioticpredictors #scales
Species from the Neotropical Ichenumonid (wasp) genus Hapsinotus, named after me ! Best birthday gift ever. Thank you Mabel!
Yay! Featured in the Deep sea Life Issue :D
International Biogeography Society 2019
Malaga, Spain
Presented some exciting preliminary results on our Beneficial project:
Anja Biging visits the Lab
Anja (co-advised Master student) comes to Frankfurt to have an week-intense SDM course, to learn the best strategies to model future suitable habitats for the herpetofauna of the Comoro Archipelago.
#GoAnja! #HardWork
20th Annual Meeting of the Gesellschaft für Biologische Systematik
(Society for Biological Systematics, GfBS)
Had a blast at the GfBS meeting in Munich, Germany. Besides meeting several new collaborators and amazing researchers, received an award for my side project with L. Breitkreuz: “Assessing the future of German insect diversity by applying species and community distribution modeling through time and space”.
#Science #BestieTeam #EcologicalModeling #InsectArmageddon #GermanyEntomofauna
Hermann Wilkomm-Stiftung Grant
Yes! Guaranteed funds to attend The Crustacean Society Mid Summer Meeting 2019. Thanks to Goethe University !#TCSmidsummermeeting2019.
Crustacean Society Meeting 2019
Great meeting of the Crustacean Society hosted at the The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Presented exciting results of our Beneficial Project at Senckenberg Research Institute, on the assessment of crustaceans vulnerability under climate change scenarios; understanding distributional shifts of invasive species to the Arctic and Northwest Pacific
Accepted the position as Neuropteriformia curator at the Zoological Museum Hamburg, part of the Center for Natural History (CeNak) !!! - University of Hamburg, Germany.
I move to Hamburg in mid-October. Can't wait to get out there and start work in such a cool, amazingly rich collection....with so much to do!
Received the Juan de La Cierva post-doctoral fellowship !
Very prestigious fellowship for post-docs in Spain
Surprise colloquium at the CeNak
Surprise talk at the Cenak colloquium. had the opportunity to talk and advertise my research interests to potential new students.
Coleoptera Curator at Senckenberg!! (SDEI)
The lab moves to Brandenburg!
sad to leave the colleagues at CeNak, but so so excited for this new opportunity! Looking forward to work on this amazing collection!
The Lab brings the institute to the field!
Workshop on field methods is offered to the technitions of the institute. fun fun fun funnnnn
Visit to Senckenberg Messel: New cassidinae fossil!
Had the pleasure of working at the Messel fossil collection. So much work! Went through all #leafbeetles fossils, and we now have #five new #tortoisebeetle fossils! I also had the opportunity to visit the Messel pit, declared #UNESCO Heritage site.
New paper out: Evolution of Subsociality in Cassidinae
Michele thesis is finally out and published! Great contributionon the eveolution of subsociality in tortoise-beetles. DOI: 10.1111/syen.12434
Congrats Michele!!
New paper out: ENM Manual
Collaboratio with KU Lab, we created an easy manual with the basic routines used in this field and a practical example of its implementation to promote good practices and guidance for new users
Improving our systems: Digitazation
the Section finally aquired a Supernova lightneing system, enabling taking better pictures of very small specimens.
New Paper out: Biodiversity and distribution patterns of deep-sea fauna along the temperate NW Pacific
great collaboration with hanieh Saeedi and angelika Brandt (Senckenberg Frankfurt) . DOI: 10.1016/j.pocean.2020.102296
The Lab joins ECN : Virtual Collections Tour
The lab joins and presents our Institute's collection in the Symposium Virtual Collections Tour at teh Entomological Collections Network! Such a fun initiative. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0JY83xFj7k
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
On behalf of the Coleoptera Lab at the SDEI, I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year!
2020 has been crazy and definitely, eventful! Certainly not the best year for many. But I am grateful for all the [old and new] friends and colleagues that have helped to make this year a bit less weird and hectic, despite these difficult times.
Here’s to better times ahead for everyone! Stay healthy & take care.
New paper out: ENMTools
Essential software package update. ENMTools was introduced in 2008 as a platform for making measurements on environmental niche models and now is one of the main tools used to explore niche evolution, shift and measurements of dynamics. DOI: 10.1111/ecog.05485
New paper out: Cassidinae Catalog!
So happy this is out result of the digitazation of the tortoise beetle collection at the cenak! DOI: 10.1649/0010-065X-75.1.191

another year, another workshop. Great fun to be out in the field with great entomologisits
Field work in the Rain forest
Field work with the FioCruz lab (Rio de Janeiro)
New paper out: Testing Niche centrality Hypothesis
Comprehensive geographic and genetic datasets allowed us to test potential causes of extinction of populations of Bryodemella tuberculata (Orthoptera: Oedipodinae) in southern germany. Great team work. DOI: 10.1007/s10531-021-02221-8
